Tokenization
Gateway tokenization
WHAT IS IT?
Gateway tokenization allows you to store payment details in exchange for a token. The token replaces the payment details in the transaction request sent to the gateway. Furthermore, if the token is stored with the payer data, it may be used when the payer returns to make another purchase.
Tokens are in PAN (primary account number) format and will pass simple card validation rules, so that they can be stored in place of credit card numbers.
BENEFITS
- Reduces PCI compliance obligations as the gateway
handles the sensitive payment details collected
from the payer - Improves purchasing experience as the consumer
will not need to enter their card details each time
Network tokenization
WHAT IS IT?
Network tokenization allows you to replace payment details with a token which is then used for transaction requests.
The difference is that a network token is recognized by the card network and issuing banks, whereas a gateway token will only be recognized by your business and the gateway. This means that when card details expire or are amended, network tokens will be automatically updated, whereas gateway tokens will not.
BENEFITS
- Reduces false declines due to built-in lifecycle management
that ensures credentials are kept up to date - Improves purchasing experience as the consumer will
not need to enter their card details each time - Enhances security as encryption occurs at every stage
of the transaction lifecycle - Improves approval rates by up to 3ppt* as tokens
are automatically updated in real-time when card
details are amended
Gateway tokens and network tokens together provide seamless and secure lifecycle management of PANs and tokens

Network tokens
Account PAN details are digitized, protecting card details across the entire payment flow, thereby helping to reduce fraud and improve approval rates.
